My Dream Job of Yore in West Africa
Honored to be in a picture as part of a new display at the VOA Africa News Center in Nairobi. This is me reporting from northern rebel held territory in Ivory Coast with young fighters seeking the right to vote, as part of my dream job previously as West and Central Africa bureau chief. For some reason I always felt more relaxed in rebel held, anarchy or grey border, type areas. I also always refused to be embedded or to pay for any security, preferring to follow my own street gut, and drive myself around in a beat up car. First time I went to a heated protest with live rounds, I walked but that didn't go over so well.
