Photographing an Eerie Reno during the Coronavirus Pandemic
I am stuck in Reno now, with COVID-19, even as the Biggest Little City slowly reopens. Taking my newborn for a walk on a recent evening, camera in hand, I went down the main strip on Virginia street, with its shuttered casinos. I went by nearby strip clubs, giant murals and still open pawn shops and motels. Everything seems to have an eerie glow, an end of the world type of vibe. Masked paramedics are at work, almost silently, while staff search the homeless entering a reconverted Events Center. We all seem like Black Mirror refugees. It's uncertain what will reopen, what will happen to old Reno, if a boom will come after yet another bust, this one caused by the global pandemic, hitting slot machine tourism especially hard.
