Pony Express in Oklahoma's Black Rodeos

While filming for the Struggle and Hope web/documentary about Oklahoma's historical all-black towns, I discovered the Pony Express, a highly competitive horse relay race held at black rodeos across the state and in Texas as well. While purists scoff that the race isn't as difficult as other rodeo events, and has brought some scruffiness, new dangers on the dirt and street to pastoral rodeos, it is wildly popular in the stands. The racing started between just a few teams on old horses several decades ago, but has now evolved into a very fast competition with fully devoted pony express competitors, going from one rodeo to the next for prize money and their own betting. In this mini-documentary, the Country Boyz out of Spencer, Oklahoma compete in the Boley rodeo.
